The Saturday Essay in the WSJ of January 08, 2011, “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”, caught my attention on a rebel website. The story of the high achieving Chinese immigrant family seeking and living their ‘American Dream’, as of this writing, had received 5471 public comments at the WSJ website. Both the essay and the public comments are rather telling of the making of the “Good American”, just like their counter part, the “Good German”, in not too distant a memory. I wrote the following letter to Amy Chua, whose impressive bio from Yale university faculty website is as follows:
Amy Chua is the John M. Duff, Jr. Professor of Law at Yale Law School. She came to Yale in 2001 after teaching at Duke and serving as a visiting professor at Columbia, Stanford, and NYU. Her expertise is in international business transactions, law and development, ethnic conflict, and globalization and the law. Her recent books include Day of Empire and World on Fire: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability. The following comment for your interesting WSJ article was left by me at one of the reprint websites – since WSJ requires registration and I hardly ever bother with that rag. Since you are not likely to visit the hundreds of websites reprinting your essay, I thought I’d just email my 0.2 cents of response to you. My bio is here, in case it matters, as it evidently matters to some before they will even examine seriously what is being said.
This response is written with a parent’s hat on, with concern that our children be able to tell the difference between a “Good German” and a “Good American”.

While all this is most impressive, I would just like to know how many Chinese families can tell “9/11 is an inside job”? That “war on terror” is a fabrication for “imperial mobilization”? And how many among that lot can realize that silence is criminal, the most abhorrent banality of evil, and boldly speak up?
Can the Chua family?
Can Amy Chua, professor at Yale Law School?
If she can, then I am really really impressed.
However, minus that, for achieving this kind of success, the proverbial “American Dream”, one really has to be fast asleep to enjoy it.
And when one is firmly established on that dream-path, one must do everything possible to hold on to it, lest it be jeopardized by not being a “team player”!
I call such successes, [suffering from] the IVY League Morons Syndrome.
As an MIT alum, I think I may be permitted to say that – and not be accused of ‘grapes are sour’, or something like that.

9/11 is a litmus test, at least for me, of both intelligence, and integrity – the I-square test.
You fail this one, doesn’t matter how many concerts you can perform at Carnegie Hall, how many degrees you hang on your wall, and how many Nobel prize medals hang around your neck.
Most Ivy Leaguers sadly fail that test – the proof of that is self-evident in the roaring silence emanating from the Ivys.
How many Nobel laureate they all have together, adding MIT Caltech and Stanford to that pool of Ivys? How many professors? How many success stories like the Chua family?
Now tell me how many have passed the I-square test!
I would have been very impressed to read in this article that during the intermission at Carnegie Hall, the Chua folks stood up and called 9/11 an inside job!
Or composed a piano piece to play at Carnegie Hall titled: “war on terror is a fabrication”.
Perhaps adding: it is the only road to “imperial mobilization” when “democracy is inimical to imperial mobilization”.
Now that would have been not only brainy, but most patriotic too.
To understand in a nutshell why it would be more prudent for Chinese and American families to perhaps pursue the “American Dream” less, to make their children suffer less from the Ivy League morons syndrome, and concentrate more on training them to the reality-space of hectoring hegemons that is destroying their own nation, please feel free to take a look at:

Perhaps Professor Amy Chua already knows all about it?
And perhaps Amy has already done exactly that at Yale instead of Carnegie Hall – right in the midst of a Skull-and-Bones meeting?
I eagerly look forward to learning about that – for that is an enviable achievement. Something I’d like to point out to my children to emulate.
